Not all that glitters are gold. Not all crochet items you see has the same quality, joy and devotion. I bet your flowers are 1000x better than shein's or temu's in reality.

You can also teach kids and adults to crochet simple flowers that you design, in art classes/workshops as another option. But if you want to keep crocheting for a living, you definitely need to factor-in your doctor's fee, hire more people or partner with others (fellow crocheters, or friends who have complementary product with yours. For instance: those who make dresses, stationery, hampers and wedding favors). I believe you are not alone this conundrum. Keep your spirit high! Other than that, I agree with most comments here. Please look into hand exercises and stretches. It won't necessarily fix your hand and wrist issues but it can help a lot and extend your time doing it. There are a lot of ways to sustain a business without burning yourself out. Great comments here.

This is soooo true! I'm 16 and have been crocheting for half my life, but I'm really insecure about selling my products. I make a lot of amigurumi toys and easy wearables (like scarves and hats) and a few blankets, but it seems that everyone else is doing the same thing. To be honest, I just feel soooo uncomfortable selling my stuff, I know I've put in a lot of effort into my products, but they don't look perfect enough to calm my hyper-perfectionist self lol

I definitely feel for you and hope you can find a way to fill out the business so that it works better for you long term. But I also really want to applaud and thank you for the attitude demonstrated here. I think it's WAY beyond time that we do away with the rat race mentality we have in North America. We're all living to work and it just doesn't make sense. But it's a huge shift to make and to see someone casually(ish)/ confidently saying 'hey, I love this, so I'm going to do it for a while and then when I have to I'll move on,' rather than scrapping the thing they love in favor of fast tracking to the path that makes some conventional measure of success easy to achieve and staying on the same exact path as everyone else is so, so inspiring

I have a four year degree and learned an entirely unrelated job to my degree while running my small business on the side I don’t quite match it but it’s getting close 😂 I got a bachelors degree in theater with a focus on stage management and now work in health insurance on the provider side doing data entry and data management and work on my small business on every break and lunch and after work hour I have I wish I could go full time with it it’s a dream

I crocheted for a living (amigurumi plushies) for about 10 years, with supplemental income almost all of these years (for example, I was a pharmacy tech as well having the crochet business during my college years). It was never sustainable, sadly. I ended up with tendonitis in my wrist multiple times. I also had to suffer a lot of rudeness from people online and in artist alleys who thought my plushies were somehow an "over priced get rich quick scheme". The reality was that I was breaking my body in order to make about $5-10/hour with no additional room for any actual profit margin. I ended up shifting over to selling clothing that's not handmade by me, and not only is a far more sustainable but people are also generally much nicer about it. Perceived value of handmade things vs manufactured things is so skewed. The perceived value of the skirts I now sell, which i design but are then made in a factory, is easily 10x higher than the perceived value of the crocheted items I painstakingly made by hand. It's tough out there. To everyone trying to make a living from any kind of societally devalued handmade craft, I really respect you and wish you the best.

I'm starting to think i got bamboozled by two booths at a craft fair I went to (And this organization really does prefer to feature artisan and handmade goods). I tried to look up their booths so I could see their shops and I couldn't get any info. Starting to realize I supported resellers. I didn't even think crocheted things could be made so cheaply and they were priced like the other handmade stuff soooooo I thought they were legit.

I think if you had patent crochet flowers there wouldn't be any competition in the US and Canada market. I'm not sure how to patent or copyright in China, probably non existent, don't know but yeah trademark and patent your unique designs or copyright your designs in the US and Canada.
